Straight-leg jeans are a wardrobe staple for both jeans lovers and impulse buyers.

They are similar to skinny jeans (which I will cover next) because of their almost snug fit. Just that they are slightly wider and taper towards the legs compared to wide-leg jeans.

Straight-leg jeans come in different varieties and color shades:

• Slim straight – flatters the body perfectly because of its slimmer design. 
• Wide straight-leg jeans – more of a high-rise jeans with a baggy vintage design
• Stovepipe straight-leg jeans. They are designed to hug the thigh but don’t taper towards the legs like normal straight-leg jeans.
• White straight-leg denim jeans. As the name suggests, they are made from white denim. The design is modern and aims to bring a summer look. Perfect for non-formal occasions.

While straight-leg jeans are popular among women,  they are a great fit for me, too. Basically, for anyone looking for a classic fit that isn’t too tight or baggy. Just a perfect pair of jeans that can be worn all year round.

Ah, my favorite type of jeans. And regardless of what TikTok influencers and their keyboard warriors say. I’ll still rock my skinny jeans from time to time. 

Why?

Skinny jeans feel great on my body. They are tight, not too tight like compression pants, though. But flatter my body just enough to get a few compliments (jk jk :)). But you get the point, right?

3. Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans are the arch-nemesis of skinny jeans. In fact, Gen Z on TikTok are going crazy about them. Claiming that they are the fashion choice they’ve always yearned for.

But you can’t blame them. I kinda feel them (the jeans), too. I mean, they are just flattering enough on the thighs, giving room for fantasy. Then widens towards the hem, creating a balanced silhouette without trying too hard.

Personally, I get itchy legs after wearing skinny jeans for too long. This doesn’t necessarily make them skinny jeans. That’s because they are not too tight or baggy like straight-cut jeans. They are somewhat in the middle, bridging the gap between comfort and style.

That means you can pair them with an official shirt and tie to the office. Then, later, change into a V-neck T-shirt and enjoy a night out with friends.

I’ve always seen many aspiring jeans brands fail during their first year in business. At first, I couldn’t wrap my head around what was wrong.

Then, I figured out that they were just stocking jeans in bulk. No plan, no marketing, no research, nothing.

1. Understand Your Target Customers, Deeply

Sounds Cliche, I know. But did you know that 75% of customers are willing to purchase from a brand that understands their needs? (Source: National Retail Federation).

Needs? How in the world would I know their needs?

Well, I’m assuming that you already know your target audience, say, Males, Moms, Teens, etc.

Now, you just have to be where they hang out. A free and easy way to get started is through reading Reddit posts.

Like here, the Redditor, a 40-year-old male, is looking for what’s trending in the jeans world:

The information you can get from this Reddit post is priceless. Maybe you can take time later and try to identify target audiences for yourself. 

But for the sake of time, lemme make your work easier. Here, I can identify three target groups. One is the trend-conscious shopper who is just looking for what’s trending.

There are the Selvedge denim guys who know what they are looking for. Lastly, you have those that are price-conscious. They’re big on brand names, just something that looks good. 

2. Prioritize Denim Quality

As someone who bought and manufactured denim jeans, I dare to count. I can tell you this: low-quality jeans = no sales. EVER!

Customers (who, I’m guessing, know what they are buying) can spot fake jeans from a mile away. There’s always something that’s off. Artificial patterns, flimsy textures, overly stiff, or both. Anyone researching how to start a denim brand needs to internalize this truth before anything else. Your fabric quality will make or break your business.

Don’t be that brand that’s known for the wrong reasons. Find quality denim and enjoy customer loyalty and brand sustainability for decades.

Expert Tip. Every other factor, like style, fit, price point, and fabric weight, ties back to your audience. Go deeper, much deeper, into hammering down your target audience. And you’ll never struggle to make sales.
