8 Types of Jeans Every Retailer Should Know

Let’s now dig deeper into these hot-selling types of jeans…

1. Straight-Leg Jeans

Straight-leg jeans are a wardrobe staple for both jeans lovers and impulse buyers.

In fact, more than 196 buyers agree with me; check this out:

Straight-Leg Jeans

Source: Reddit

They are similar to skinny jeans (which I will cover next) because of their almost snug fit. Just that they are slightly wider and taper towards the legs compared to wide-leg jeans.

Straight-leg jeans come in different varieties and color shades:

  • Slim straight – flatters the body perfectly because of its slimmer design.
  • Wide straight-leg jeans – more of a high-rise jeans with a baggy vintage design
  • Stovepipe straight-leg jeans. They are designed to hug the thigh but don’t taper towards the legs like normal straight-leg jeans.
  • White straight-leg denim jeans. As the name suggests, they are made from white denim. The design is modern and aims to bring a summer look. Perfect for non-formal occasions.
Straight-Leg Jeans

While straight-leg jeans are popular among women,  they are a great fit for me, too. Basically, for anyone looking for a classic fit that isn’t too tight or baggy. Just a perfect pair of jeans that can be worn all year round.

For those wondering how to shrink jeans when customers need a better fit, straight-legs often respond well to standard shrinking techniques without losing their signature silhouette. A selling point worth mentioning to customers between sizes.

2. Skinny Jeans

Ah, my favorite type of jeans. And regardless of what TikTok influencers and their keyboard warriors say. I’ll still rock my skinny jeans from time to time.

Why?

Skinny jeans feel great on my body. They are tight, not too tight like compression pants, though. But flatter my body just enough to get a few compliments (jk jk :)). But you get the point, right?

Skinny Jeans

Make no mistake, skinny jeans are not slim-fit jeans. The latter hugs the body closely but not as tight as skinny jeans. I’ve written a full guide on slim vs skinny jeans to clear out the common confusion that is out there.

3. Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans are the arch-nemesis of skinny jeans. In fact, Gen Z on TikTok are going crazy about them. Claiming that they are the fashion choice they’ve always yearned for.

But you can’t blame them. I kinda feel them (the jeans), too. I mean, they are just flattering enough on the thighs, giving room for fantasy. Then widens towards the hem, creating a balanced silhouette without trying too hard.

Wide-Leg Jeans

Personally, I get itchy legs after wearing skinny jeans for too long. Probably due to the tight-fitting fabric, something I don’t worry about with wide-leg jeans. This comfort factor is exactly why so many fashion influencers have created guides on How To Style Wide Leg Jeans for everything from casual weekend looks to polished office attire.

Expert Tip. Wide-leg jeans can be styled with anything —they sell so fast. Your customers can pair them with oversized tees, bustiers, blazers, and so much more.

4. Tapered Jeans

Just as the name suggests, tapered jeans are designed to narrow towards the legs.

This doesn’t necessarily make them skinny jeans. That’s because they are not too tight or baggy like straight-cut jeans. They are somewhat in the middle, bridging the gap between comfort and style.

Tapered Jeans

That means you can pair them with an official shirt and tie to the office. Then, later, change into a V-neck T-shirt and enjoy a night out with friends.

See, effortlessly stylish.

Tapered Jeans

Tapered jeans are made from Spandex Fabric and cotton to make them stretchy. Ever wondered where do jeans companies get their fabric for these versatile pieces? Many premium jeans manufacturers source specialized denim blends from mills in Japan, Turkey, and Italy to achieve that perfect tapered drape. Hence, perfect for any type of body or career occupation. One can rock these jeans for hours without feeling any irritation.

Tapered jeans come in different types: slim taper, relaxed taper, and straight taper. From the names, you can already picture how they look from the jeans types I have covered.

5. Flared Jeans

These cuties are back this season, with a lot of customers stocking dozens in their wardrobes.

FUN FACT: Did you know flared jeans have been around since the 1970s? Yeah, half a century old.

Just like wide-leg jeans, flared jeans snugly fit the thigh and widen towards the hem. Here’s what I’m talking about:

Flared Jeans

Great for fashionistas who want to make a statement with their dress codes. If you know what you are doing, flared jeans can be worn with anything. From blazers to wedge sandals and everything in between.

In the Levi vs Wrangler Jeans comparison, both iconic brands offer distinct takes on the flared style. Levi’s typically providing a more fashion-forward cut while Wrangler offers sturdier construction for their flares.

There are a whole lot of flared jeans to choose from:

  • High-waisted flared jeans
  • Low-raise flared jeans
  • Cropped flared jeans
  • Baggy flared jeans

These are some of the best-selling flared jeans in 2025. Act fast and make huge bucks before the hype fades away.

6. Selvedge Denim Jeans

Selvedge Denim Jeans

Selvedge denim is a non-negotiable if you want to attract hardcore denim lovers. That’s because these jeans fade much better than normal jeans.

Here’s why…

Two reasons. Self-finished edges.  Unique weaving process. This also ensures that Selvedge denim is 10X more durable than regular denim.

But this comes at a cost. See, it takes more time to achieve Selvedge state for these jeans. Meaning that production is resource-intensive hence the higher prices.

Selvedge jeans are great if you are an established brand. Get your feet wet with normal jeans, and gradually add Selvedge to your collection.  For customers debating the trousers vs jeans question for business casual environments, selvedge offers that perfect middle ground. The structure and quality of fine trousers with the unmistakable character of premium denim.

7. Distressed Jeans

These are also a wardrobe staple for many fashion enthusiasts. You never know when a concert is around the corner. And you need something to blend in with no extra effort.

Distressed jeans have been intentionally ripped or damaged. Think of holes or fades that look unique on jeans. Here are Levi’s distressed jeans:

Distressed Jeans

Isn’t that amazing? If you didn’t think so, then here’s another great pair of distressed jeans for those who don’t like attention:

Distressed Jeans

But who says you can’t go crazy? For customers that live for the cameras, then here’s one you should stock:

Distressed Jeans

Although they don’t sell as first as straight-leg jeans or others on the list. They are still a great add-on if you hate leaving money on the table.

Just make sure your marketing is on point to get more eyeballs to your distressed jeans. And outcompete the biggest players in this niche. While your competition may focus solely on style, educating customers about How Jeans Are Manufactured. Particularly the craftsmanship behind quality distressing. This justify premium pricing and build trust with discerning buyers.

8. Judy Blue Jeans

Judy Blue Jeans

Lastly, we have Judy Blue Jeans. A must-have if you have a pear-shaped body or having trouble finding plus-size jeans.

I just had to put them out there because of how dope they are. They are tailored to offer unmatched durability and comfort. While at the same time staying on top of trends. For retailers curious about where are Judy Blue jeans manufactured, their production facilities are primarily based in China with strict quality control standards.

This means you’ll get them in all designs and colors. For instance, the Judy Blue Jeans Flared Pants. Judy Blue Jeans Relaxed Pants. Judy Blue Jeans, Skinny Jeans, and so much more.

How to Choose the Right Types of Jeans for Your Store

I’ve always seen many aspiring jeans brands fail during their first year in business. At first, I couldn’t wrap my head around what was wrong.

Then, I figured out that they were just stocking jeans in bulk. No plan, no marketing, no research, nothing.

1. Understand Your Target Customers, Deeply

Sounds Cliche, I know. But did you know that 75% of customers are willing to purchase from a brand that understands their needs? (Source: National Retail Federation).

Needs? How in the world would I know their needs?

Well, I’m assuming that you already know your target audience, say, Males, Moms, Teens, etc.

Now, you just have to be where they hang out. A free and easy way to get started is through reading Reddit posts.

Like here, the Redditor, a 40-year-old male, is looking for what’s trending in the jeans world:

Understand Your Target Customers, Deeply

Source: Reddit

The information you can get from this Reddit post is priceless. Maybe you can take time later and try to identify target audiences for yourself.

But for the sake of time, lemme make your work easier. Here, I can identify three target groups. One is the trend-conscious shopper who is just looking for what’s trending.

There are the Selvedge denim guys who know what they are looking for. Lastly, you have those that are price-conscious. They’re big on brand names, just something that looks good.

2. Prioritize Denim Quality

As someone who bought and manufactured denim jeans, I dare to count. I can tell you this: low-quality jeans = no sales. EVER!

Prioritize Denim Quality

Customers (who, I’m guessing, know what they are buying) can spot fake jeans from a mile away. There’s always something that’s off. Artificial patterns, flimsy textures, overly stiff, or both. Anyone researching how to start a denim brand needs to internalize this truth before anything else. Your fabric quality will make or break your business.

Don’t be that brand that’s known for the wrong reasons. Find quality denim and enjoy customer loyalty and brand sustainability for decades.

Expert Tip. Every other factor, like style, fit, price point, and fabric weight, ties back to your audience. Go deeper, much deeper, into hammering down your target audience. And you’ll never struggle to make sales.
